Chapter 1

“So you’re our new resident?”

Siwon straightened up in his seat, resisting the urge to reach up and fix his tie. He nodded slowly to the shoulder-length, wavy and jet-black haired man in a white lab coat in front of him. The man was peering down at him from behind black, thick-rimmed glasses and then turning back to the computer monitor in front of him.

“Choi Siwon-ssi eh? Welcome to Yongshin Mental Hospital. Of all places you choose to work at, you picked a hospital full of mad people,” the man with surprisingly milky-white skin gave a smirk and rolled his eyes. “I mean like, seriously? First me, then you? Why do they keep sending good-looking people to this miserable hospital? If you want to transfer out, I would totally understand,” the man said while giving a wink, twirling a strip of hair between his fingers with the other hand lax and resting on the wooden desk. His eyes scanned Siwon rather thoroughly after that as they both sat opposite each other in the small office that morning.

“Anyway, my name is Kim Heechul, although I do allow the people around here to call me Dr Big Space Star as well. Suit yourself, Siwon-ssi. I am your attending, and would expect total allegiance from you, got it? If you’re just going to be another Lee Hyukjae then I’m going to try my best to treat you very, very ‘well’. That short, good-for-nothing bastard, backstabber,” Siwon’s eyes widened as the senior attending psychiatrist thumped a clenched fist on the desk suddenly.

“With all due respect, Sir, I opted to transfer here.” Siwon cleared his throat softly before glancing up. The fist relaxed and a jaw fell at that.

“Now you deserve a place here just for that. This is an old madhouse for crackpots, situated most unstrategically in the outskirts of Seoul, away from all the glorious civilisation and real humanity. Why in that hopefully sane mind of yours would you choose to do that?”

“Pardon me, Sir. But at my previous hospital there were just too many residents. As soon as I heard that there was an opening here under Dr Kim Heechul –you, Sir- I applied right away. It’s an honour to be able to learn under your guidance, Sir.”

“Tell me, Siwon… are you trying to hit on me on your first day of work?” the face was suddenly blank and serious, lips pursed and hands clasped neatly on the desk.

Siwon hurriedly put his hands up in an apologetic manner and shook his head. “No, Sir, nothing like that! It’s true, your name is quite famous in our hospital.”

The wavy-haired man popped an eyebrow upwards curiously, resting his chin on his propped-up hands on the desk. “Famous? The stories are still circulating, eh?” Heechul said nonchalantly.

“I only know that you’re a very bold and brilliant doctor that I would like to work with. I am not concerned with anything else other than that, Sir.”

The stony face that was there before somehow melted into  a devious expression, cunning smirk touching the corners of the man’s plump lips. “Well, you’re clever, Siwon-ssi. I would have very much preferred a ‘yes’, actually. But to deny that would mean that you do understand the importance of a good work attitude and for that I shall reward you with your very own patient to follow up with. Would you like that, Siwonnie?”

Siwon tilted his head, puzzled. “Just one patient, Sir?”

Dr Kim threw his head back in an outrageously loud laugh out of nowhere, strangely delicated hands covering the mouth hysterically. Siwon never thought he had a good comedian in himself.

“ ‘Course not, silly. Since you’re new around here I don’t want you so burdened just yet, although we don’t really get new cases that often. You’ll be assigned a few cases, but I’d like to reward you with a special one since you’re so funny and good-looking.”

Siwon’s eyes widened in surprise as he clasped his hands on his mouth. “It’s an honour, Sir! Thank you, I hope you’ll forgive my lackings and teach me with your vast knowledge. “Certainly, Siwonnie. But you won’t report directly to me, though. I have far too many things to be concerned with at the moment.” Siwon thought he heard the sounds of a computer game coming from the speakers. The other man quickly cleared his throat loudly at the same time before clicking on his computer mouse.

“You’ll be directly under a Dr Lee Hyukjae. No, not the comedian because this guy has as much humour as a brick. He’s a backstabbing, disloyal, smelly, stingy but otherwise good junior attending. Wait a moment.”

Dr Kim dialled a few buttons on the telephone sitting on his desk, swinging around lightly in his chair. “Sungmin-ssi, please get Dr Lee Hyukjae here.”

An almost child-like male voice buzzed to life. “Just stick it there into his arm, yeah, uh, Dr Lee is currently on his rounds, Dr Kim.”

“I don’t care if he’s on his rounds or squares, Sungmin. Just get his skinny ass here.”

“Just what are you up to now, hyung? Hyukjae is attending to case 202, bipolar and schizo. It’ll be some time before he’s available, I’m afraid.”

“Yet I believe that our capable and loveable senior nurse Sungmin-ssi will be able to change that and get Lee Hyukjae to my office in five minutes. Tell him if he doesn’t magically appear in my office by then someone's gonna die.” Siwon backed away in his chair a little at that, a little worried at the happy and seemingly innocent face playing on the man’s face while saying those words.

“Aye that. I just don’t want to be that person. I’ll see what I can do.”

Heechul pressed another button and a beeping tone ensued. Siwon quickly displayed his neutral face to hide away the shocked expression that was there a moment ago.

“We shall wait then. Before that…say, Siwonnie, do you like cats?” A photo frame displaying a picture of three cats lounging pompously on a couch was practically shoved at his face. “This is Heebum, Baengshin and Champagne. Gorgeous, aren’t they? Just like their owner…Moi.”

Siwon didn’t know what other response to give other than an awkward nod. He exhaled in relief silently when three knocks filled the air before a bleach-blonde head popped into the office. Siwon quickly got up from his chair and bowed to the new figure but was given no heed.

“I am not your bitch, Dr Kim Heechul. I was about to carry out the electroshock procedure on a patient before Sungmin-ssi told me that a dangerous patiently supposedly wielding a broken backscratcher had escaped and was seeking refuge at your office. I was told someone might be dying.” Siwon swallowed; t he man didn’t look pleased at all.

“And yet you came.” Dr Kim gave a one-sided smirk. “Ah, can’t you take a little pinch of humour? You do realize you share a name with a comedian. Anyway, Sungmin-ssi got it wrong. The patient was not wielding a backscratcher. Backstabber’s more like it, and I believe Dr Lee Hyukjae here is an expert with that weapon, no?”

Dr Lee scowled, burying his hands deep into the pockets of his lab coat. “If you’re going to continue playing your childish games, then I’m off. I have no time for this,” he said, bleached fringe in a matted mess.

“Too bad I’m your senior, eh, Hyukjae? I told you I’m not done with you.”

Siwon gulped as the fiery exchange of steely stares between the two attending psychiatrists ensued in deadly silence, with him caught right in the middle of crossfire.

“Well, anyway, say hi to Choi Siwon-ssi here. He’s your new resident, FYI. Someone to make you feel miserable each time you look into the mirror. Boy, aren’t I glad.” Heechul jerked his eyebrows upwards shrewdly. “Don’t you feel like a peeled banana with that hair every time you see yourself?”

“There is nothing wrong with my looks, thank you very much. And I would very much prefer if you didn’t post embarrassing candid pictures or stories of me and the staff on Twitter. The world doesn’t need to know, thank you. If there’s nothing else then I’ll take charge of him from here.” Dr Lee straightened his coat rather roughly while brushing his messy fringe. “Come, Choi Siwon-ssi. We have things to do.”

Dr Kim chuckled softly, eyes glued to the monitor. “What’s wrong with sharing some humour with the world? Anyway, let him take case 217. Maybe that brat needs someone tall and good-looking, not to mention slightly goofy to melt that icy, bratty heart of his,” Heechul said before hiding behind his computer monitor again, one hand holding out a brown-coloured file.

“You do realize you just referred to a patient as a brat? I thought no one was supposed to touch that case but you.” Hyukjae grabbed the file out of the man’s slender hand.

“Nah, I will get the truth out of that brat in only a couple of minutes. I like to give opportunities for my hoobaes to learn.” He gave a wink. “Now run along, kids.”

“We’re not even yet,” Hyukjae said, narrowing his eyes at Heechul after shoving Siwon out of the door first.

“I should be the one saying that to you, Hyukjae.”

“I’m waiting.”

Dr Lee closed the door with a small click.
